The number 108 is considered sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, and the yogic tradition. A Tibetan mâlâ, or Japa mâlâ, comes in the form of a rosary with 108 beads and is used for meditation, mantras, and prayers. Each bead corresponds to the recitation of a mantra or a prayer, which is repeated 108 times. The Guru bead, the ending bead, marks the beginning and end of the mâlâ/song/prayer/mantra. In Nepal, the Om Mani Padme mantra is one of the most commonly recited by Buddhist faithful.
